The Information Regulator (Regulator) had the pleasure of hosting the Right to Information (RTI) on 6th September 2017 at its temporary location at the Corner of Thabo Sehume and Francis Baard, SALU Building on the 23rd Floor. This visit by the South Asian Country is the first visit to the Regulator by a body with the same or similar functions.
The Regulator and the RTI are both newly established institutions which fulfil constitutional mandates, with the RTI focusing on access to information whilst the Regulator focuses on both the promotion of access to information and the protection of personal information.
The discussion between the two institutions mainly focused on the similarities and differences in approach to regulate access to information. Key learning includes the strict requirement for independence and to make these institutions accessible to the ordinary people on the street that might not have the means to approach a formal court of law where he or she believes the access to information is required to achieve a specific outcome.
